I've never really heard anything by this band. I have a compilation CD with a song from Rhett's newest solo album...I think the song was called "help me suzanne". It was the most limp...NEUTERED thing I have heard in a long time by a supposed big-time singer songwriter. You think that it's going to pick up at some point....and then it just stays all PRECIOUS and everything. Totally hated it. After that I pretty much decided not to seek his stuff out. I don't care if that's a bad example either...because give me the worst example of Tweedy or RA anyday and I'll enjoy it a thousand times more.

I'd say that is a bad example, but only because Rhett hasn't made much good music since Satellite Rides. His best days are behind him, unlike RA and Tweedy. That'd be like not wanting to hear Copperhead Road because Steve Earle's new one sucks Viggo Mortensen's huge balls.

Anybody like that song '19'? I got a promo of 'Fight Songs' back in the 90s from a friend who owned a small record store. I couldn't believe how weak this song was, especially since I was already into the Volt, Whiskeytown, Bone, and Buckner kept reading about the Old 97s in No Depression and was surprised how bland and wussy they were. The twang part of their sound always seemed forced like they were trying to jump the altcountry wagon, remember seeing them on ACL and thinking the lead guy was a poser in between songs he would pepper his banter with all these 'hey y'alls' like he was trying to prove his country credibility talking about how he was wearing plaid like Willie Nelson um friends did not think much of their performance. Nothing like when Whiskeytown did ACL, sure Ryan had his Keith Richards/Ian McCulloch hair back then and was a bit of a primadonna but the songs were solid (that electric take of 'Dancing With The Women' is the shit!) man I wish they'd release a dvd of the show like they did with Son Volt used to have a grainy VHS taped copy but would love to see the full show hope we see this dvd come out soon! But yeah, Ryan I saw them around this time at the Nick playing to about 5 people and man if RA didn't step up to the plate and deliver the goods, the band played for 3 hours plus then Ryan still came back out for an encore with just his acoustic then a guy I know said Ryan came over to his house and played and drank all night. Ryan is a bratty snotty little fucker but he has got a huge amount of talent, just his Whiskeytown catalog alone seals the deal for me--his solo stuff has been all over the place but I can still find at least 2-3 songs on each album that blow me away.

I get bored as hell listening to Rhett and the 97s. They have a couple good songs but listening to a whole album is zzzzzzzzzzz to me every song is the same. I actually like Ryan Adams better and I hate Ryan Adams!

Too Far to Care and Satellite Rides are both great albums (and I'd say Wreck Your Life is pretty good), but I don't have much desire to go back to either these days. I used to be huge into them, but they don't do much for me these days. I think a lot of it was growing up around here and them having such a huge buzz around them. They were going to be the next big thing and, well, that never really happened.

Rhett can write some really great lyrics and really cringe-inducing ones as well. His solo albums were atrocious.

Barrel Chested > Too Far To Care > Strangers Almanac IMO. Is Slobberbone WAY underrated? Of Course they are and they are easily my favorite band this side of anything Paul Westerberg. But as much as people here hate the Old 97's I can't bring myself to feel the same way. Too Far To Care stands high on the list of all time great alt-country albums somewhere right below ETYTWRWWT, Barrel Chested and Trace. Strangers Almanac is ok for me with about two great songs and a nice skyway rip-off. I don't know, I suppose that maybe if I enjoy just one band that might be considered wimpy that is something I can live with. Ryan Adams, even though I like his songs, seems far more EMO to my ears.

I like some of the music, but seeing Rhett Miller on stage is the deal-breaker for me. Can't stand to see that girly-man bouncing and wiggling all over the place. Boy George has more balls than this tool.

We agree to disagree. I like them.
