Best Dylan Covers?

Postby Beldo » Sun Mar 22, 2015 6:33 pm

There's a ton of bad Dylan covers out there. I was seeking out some tribute albums and am appalled at how bad 99% of the versions are. Part of the problem is it seems like everyone wants to do their favorite Dylan song rather than the song that they might actually be able to handle. If you get called to do a Dylan album, I'd recommend not trying to do something off Highway 61 Revisited.I honestly don't think anyone has done a good job of covering a song off that album, though I'm sure some would disagree. Blonde On Blonde is also asking for trouble, but it can be done. Did you guys know Lenny Kravitz recorded a version of "Rainy Day Women #12 & 35"? I'm telling you so you can avoid it. I beg of you, do not seek it out.

Anyway, what are some people's favorites?

Some of mine:
Rod Stewart - Mama You Been On My Mind

Rod Stewart - Tomorrow Is A Long Time

Built to Spill - Jokerman

Stephen Malkmus & Lee Ranaldo - Can't Leave Her Behind

Them - It's All Over Now Baby Blue

The Band - When I Paint My Masterpiece
"I thought, ‘That looks like a nice tree, I’m going to climb that f*cking tree.’ Climbed it and sat there with my hood up for about 10 minutes." - Liam Gallagher

Greg Trooper and Steve Earle - I'll Keep It with Mine
Jimmy Lafave - Buckets of Rain

The Band's version of Masterpiece is so good.

I enjoy The Jerry Garcia Band's covers of 'Senor,' 'Tangled Up in Blue,' and this here 'I Shall Be Released':

Was just listening to Senor and thinking Magnolia Electric Co. would have killed that song. Would be cool if someone did a cover of that and rocked it out (but kept the sax) instead of trying to make it sound like a mariachi tune.

Your list is a really good one Beldo

To throw a couple more in the mix

Rolling Stones Rolling Stone is very very good if not great or as good as say... the couple Malkmus covers.
But the Gondry vidoe is hypnotic fun and maybe I have a bit of a crush on crazy ass Patricia Arquette

Beldo your first call is my personal favorite. Rod Stewart Version of Mama you've been on my mind is a complete masterpiece. He just adds so much to the song that wasn't there in the original demo.

I can't figure out how to embed but Gene Clark should have gotten a cowriting credit for this version of I pity the poor immigrant. He makes up a completely different melody that greatly surpasses the original and his vocals are unbelievable.
