You're welcome DADDY and thanks Beldo, that was a good read. Here's another article from No Depression, more Tweedy talk!

Where did the Son Volt fans go? This is really a great record. I've already listened to this more than Honky Tonk and I've had that album for four years.

also a heads up, NPR usually stops the first listen streaming once the album is released so you only have tonight and tomorrow left.

I've ordered my copy from Amazon. I think I'll wait to listen until it arrives in mid-March, but I'm looking forward to it. A Son Volt album is always an event. I didn't really like Honky Tonk that much, but have loved most of the rest of their catalogue.

Thanks Beldy. Cairo and Southern sound's near and dear to me since it's close to home. I don't know if it has the potential for revitalization but it really feels special - like a place that's kind of southern and kind of midwestern. The tuning is perfect for it.

I love Jay, continue to buy and enjoy the stuff he puts out, but I have such a weird mental block about this being "Son Volt". To me, this is more like Jay Farrar and His Merry Band of Musicians or something. I feel like Son Volt ended in '99 or '00 or so. Don't know why I have such a hard time accepting his continued use of the name; I'll have to get over it someday. :)

Anyway, really like this one.

I'm liking what I've heard so far. Pre-ordered the album. Another great start to the year.

Getting a blast of nostalgia with this. Really gotta figure out a way to get to the store and pick this up today. I wish the blues-y tracks were a little more...I dunno, heavy with the beat or something? Dirtier and grittier?

I echo Blaze's sentiments. Some of these tracks feel like they could've come right from Straightaways or WST. Those bluesy tracks could be a little dirtier or something. Overall I think some of the peeps wanting to hear the old SV sound for a while will be pleasantly surprised.

I'm not really into this one. I think it's better than "Honky Tonk" and "The Search", and it's a decent album, but I'm just not that into it. I think it took me a long time to finally be able to accept Jay's voice, but whether it's due to the material or my own changing feelings on it, I have a hard time with it now. When it's his early Tupelo voice (with stank on it) I can get into it, and some of the quiet stuff on his solo albums I like as well. It's this in between thing I don't like.

I'd still give this a 3/5 but it's just mediocre to me.
In terms of this sudden trio of alt-country legends releases, I'd put it well below Ryan Adams "Prisoner" but above SKM's "ACOCCRVAVEBBAB" or whatever it is. The main reason for that being that it's about 1/4 the length of the SKM album. If I'm gonna listen to an album that I'm lukewarm about, I'd rather it be the length of the Garfield Christmas Special and not the last fucking Lord of the Rings film.

Gotta agree with El Santo. For me, Jay's voice has always had this very sleepy quality. If the songs are good, it works perfectly, if the songs are just okay, I'm liable to fall asleep. This one isn't terrible, but the songs are just not strong enough to keep my attention.

Jay was probably just preoccupied what with all the emailing Tweedy lately.
