Old 97s - Graveyard Whistling - 02.24.17

"I'm good with God. I wonder how she feels about me?"

So ends the chorus of the Old 97's' "Good With God," the lead single from the band's 11th album, Graveyard Whistling. Due February 24th, the album offers up another boozy blast of Texas twang, train-beat percussion and guitar grit from Rhett Miller and company, who recorded its 11 songs in the same border-town studio that spawned the group's major-label debut, Too Far to Care, two decades earlier.

With their original four-piece lineup still intact, the Old 97's' welcome a new face into the fold with "Good With God," whose titular omniscient character is played by Brandi Carlile. The two trade vocal duties throughout, with Carlile's voice bathed in plenty of godly reverb. The result is an ominous, off-kilter duet between Miller and his maker, driven forward at highway speed by bandmates Philip Peeples, Murry Hammond and Ken Bethea.

Produced by Vance Powell, Graveyard Whistling also features help from co-writers like Nicole Atkins and Butch Walker, making it one of the most collaborative albums in the band's catalog. Some habits never die, though, and the band will be supporting the album's release as they've supported every record before it: with a lengthy spring tour that stretches from the Florida coastline to Southern California.

Meh, I actually liked Rhett's last solo effort quite a bit. I think I may prefer my 97's mining the pop of Satellite Rides and Rhett's first solo as opposed to their alt-country stylings.

Ha! Good man. Thanks for asking. I still lurk around on here from time to time, usually checking to see what music I'm missing out on, but just not posting much lately. Just busy and whatnot. How about you?

I really like this new tune, better than anything on the last couple Old 97's releases to my ears. I looked up Rhett's solo stuff because of Daddy's mention, apparently I missed at least 3 solo releases. I'll have to check out The Traveller, the bluegrass mention on wikipedia is intriguing. I guess I was so busy watching my mailbox for Brent best that I forgot about Rhett.

This album is surprisingly good. No it's nothing close to their classic alt country albums and Rhett Miller clearly has lost a bit when it comes to song writing but it's solid alt country.

I didn't take to the last one (ok, the last 3), but this one's really good. Best since BIOG.

I completely agree. The last one was hailed as a return to form but Rhett Miller was trying way too hard to sound menacigng dropping F bombs every other line which was about as authentic as Ryan Adams trying to be "Punk as Fuck."

When they make a Happy Days-like sitcom about the 90s, "Those Were the Days" will be the theme song.

Before I pencil this album as your #1, maybe I can have you change your mind. Read the review I wrote of the album I have penciled in as my #1.
