That could be said for that whole band, everyone is part of a puzzle, but it works. They are a tremendous live band, I think there's something to be said for that. The Edge's strength lies in where his strength is not. The guys gone 25 years without ever even insinuating a wanked out guitar solo. That kind of rules.
I agree with this 100%. Edge is kinda cool. Maybe not a genius technique wise but innovative technique has been kinda stale for what 50-ish years at least. Edge has a unique sound from playing effects and as much as playing effects isn't my thing, its probably the biggest part of what has made the greatest guitar players of the last few decades. That said what do I know I'm a hack.
I had no idea DLR played guitar that much. I've seen video of him strumming an acoustic but I had no idea. There were rumors he played one of the acoustic intros on Women and Children First or Fair Warning for years but there's no way he could've played that. EVH has pretty much discounted those rumors for years.

john mayer. this guy is stuck in my craw. what's most annoying is how people keep telling me how good he is. i'll allow that his song arrangements are stellar, and if he's the one arranging, then he's got some real talent. but his playing? yawn. reminds me too much of johnny lang. all style no substance. on a related note, howcome this guy has a signature model and DAVID FUCKING GILMORE doesn't? fender.. i'm talking to YOU!!
Have you ever heard any live John Mayer? Or heard any of the stuff he did before he became infatuated with Dave Matthews?
A lot of people don't realize he was a child guitar prodigy and many people thought he was the second coming of Stevie Ray Vaughan.
His stuff you hear on the radio is NO inclination of how great a guitar player he is -- SRV and Hendrix don't fit into his acoustic pop rock singer/songwriter vibe. But make no mistake -- he is a bad ass guitar player.
He's about to release a power trio blues ablum under the band name "The John Mayer Trio." I think he'll grab A LOT of ears with his playing in this format.

well, there was the performance at the eric clapton-sponsored guitar festival that my buddy played for me the other day on DVD. he was trying to show me that the guy plays a mean guitar... it left me flat. he's alright, but really... nothing that mind blowing to me...
it's not that i hate his guitar playing though.. i hate his singing voice.. i just think that his playing is pretty over-rated. and i can say with confidence that he ain't - nor is he ever gonna be - as good as hendrix or srv.
you want to hear a young player with real talent, listen to derek trucks. now THAT kid plays a guitar, damn...

Jon Mayer is the bestest guitar player since Hootie. Maybe he'll get his own Burger King commercial soon. I can't get enough of Jon Mayer, he needs his own tv station or at least his own radio station. He rocks.
And basically any goddamn blues guitarists that play certain notes over and over again and that's somehow supposed to be *soulful*. Give me a damn break. It's a machine. It has no soul. Thus I must rage against it.
Metal rules. Eddie Van Halen kicks ass. Ace Frehley is pretty cool although frankly I always preferred Vinnie Vincent.
It's hard to say who's actually 'bad'. I mean, these guys have been playing for years at a professional level. They can't be THAT bad. Overrated, yes.
The all time most overrated guitar player ever is Randy Rhoads. God, the best thing that ever happened to that kid was death...he became so much more of a genius after he was dead than when he was playing....so says Lemmy, anyway.

Or maybe he could make sloppy albums from his basement that nobody buys, longing after the stardom he wanted so dearly but never achieved, even while doing what some of his most hardcore fans called "selling out" for a softer more pop-accessible sound....all the while being an average guitar player at best.

yups, good things good things. Jon Mayer rocks, he's the best. Wish he and Hootie would join forces, that would rock. Maybe they can tour together. Only stupid losers record down in their basement, right on toad!!!

Compared to most of your strangely ill-tempered replies targeted at seemingly innocent posts (I still haven't figured out why you get so worked up over some things) that's pretty weak...

Everyone knows technical proficiency is the be-all and end-all when it comes to music. That is why Yngwie Malmsteen is generally regarded to be the greatest musician of all time, instead of a walking punchline.

Signor Falconi. I feel your blues He's certainly had his moments and he has been pretty loyal to his heroes. But has that m/f ever made an absolute mint out of it all? He's never really moved me with anything he's done. And don't even start me on Tears In Heaven or whatever it's called.
PS ACT would like users to bear in mind that at this hour it is more than Likely that Loon Rider has been imbibing the devil in solution and is therefore likely to be rather dyspeptic in his attitudes. Thankyou.

I won't say he's the worst, but definilty one of the most overrated. A little sloppy at times and his forays into reggae were utterly embarrasing.
I always feel that when they talk about the "holy trinity" of rock guitar (Clapton, Page, Hendrix) that Eric and Pagey were way behind the Voodoo Child.
