Robyn Hitchcock, He also wrote 'I wanna destroy you' which about everyone including the Mats and Uncle Tupelo have covered. I think the replacements used to also cover 'the man who invented himself' by Hitchcock live too. He was a huge influence on both the Replacements and REM. I've been meaning to start a thread on him for a while. Unfortunately most of his 80's solo stuff is out of print but a lot of it is very good if somewhat inconsistent and always very quirky. And you got to love a guy who writes a song called 'Raymond Chandler Evening.'TANEYTOWN wrote:I love this live Mats cd ! Hey who did Sleeping Nights Of Jesus ? Man that song is cool on here!

Yeah, great show, although not for the uniniated because half the songs are sloppy half finished covers--I think side 2 (I only have it on cassette) is about 5 or 6 starts/stops in a row, stuff like 'I Will Follow' and 'Smoke On The Water' and 'Radio Free Europe' abandoned after the first chorus. Hey, I like that Mats boot 'Simply Unacceptable' where Paul rips on Hitchcock with the line 'someone gave Robyn Hitchcock some tea with ice in it today and he said 'this is simply unacceptable''. As far as Hitchcock, I never could really get into him, even the Soft Boys stuff never did anything for me. His weirdness seems forced too, unlike his influences like Rocky Erickson and Syd Barrett who were full-on freaks. But besides that I just never could get into his music.
