Why can't Americans at large handle gay marriage?

Post by Machine »

Who the fuck cares if gay people get married. Do Americans hate the idea of Gays getting married cause America really and truly is a religious state and two people of the same sex getting married just isn't cool with this fictional character named God.

I love ya machine, and to answer your question I have no fucking idea. Out of all the issues out there this one amazes me the most that it's an issue.

"When rock and roll first came around the preachers all went crazy
But soon that wasn't enough to bring people in the door
So now they jump on any scandal that they can to try and save me
'Cause they know I don't buy that crap about the Devil's music anymore
Gay people getting married
That's what scares people who don't have shit all else to be scared of these days"
-Todd Snider

Mr. Snider brings up a good point, how is this still an issue with everything else going on? There are a million things to be scared of more than gay marriage these days.

Generational thing. It'll pass once the baby boomers start dying or the younger generations actually start voting.

I think a lot of people see it as an attack on christianity which they can already see waning in the popular area. Similar to the "war on christmas". This is also what "return to values" is code for....return to christian values. Take for example the county I live in is having an uproar cause they want to put the 10 commandments in the school. Now I have asked many people and only the very old even recall having the 10 commandments in their school, and even then they weren't sure they just remember reading bible passages. I think it's funny these are the same people who want government out of everything but somehow feel the government should be the ones teaching religious values to their children....very confusing stance.

to answer this question, and why politicians will stretch the issue out for as long as they possibly can is because it's an easy stance to get votes on either way without having to deal with real issues. It's also divisive and holds up the illusion that democrats and republicans are actually different

The Christian Right can't keep their noses out of other peoples' bedrooms. What 2 consenting adults do in the privacy of their own home is no one's business. In my experience, most homophobes are closet homos themselves. Never will understand why gay people are such an obsession for the family values types. Gay people have always been here, nothing new or novel about it. I love me some gay marriage, can't wait for that shit to hit Alabama

I kind of think this as well, particularly the ones who think "gay is a choice" because they are suppressing their own urges towards that direction. not all of them but people tend to view the world through their own experiences so...
