Most over-looked albums of 2005

Post by Machine »

Let's see your picks on albums you like but just ain't gettin' the proper ink around here.

Mind goes to;

Sarah Lee Guthrie and Johnny Irion's 'Exploration
You'd think that this place being an altcountry website that this album would be gettin' some chatter around here but surprising to my eyes it ain't. This is an awesome, classic Gram and Emmylou style 'altcountry album'. Great for parties and social functions with your cool friends while you're loser friends stay at home.

For guilty pleasure's Canada's own and sometime member of Broken Social Scene - Feist. Her album 'Let It Die' is a guilty pleasure album that can set a nice mood in your humble abodes.

That is all I can think of. LET'S HEAR YOUR STINKIN' PICKS!
ARE YOU READY FOR FREDDY?

Begonia's

Is quickly rising as one of the year's best for me. If there was no Lucero album this year, specifically thanks to the song "The War", might even be my number 1.

I agree with both of these suggestions. Sarah Lee Guthrie and Johnny Irion's 'Exploration and Caitlin and Thad's Begonias are two of my favourites of the year. Others that I really like that I have seen little discussion of here are:

The Forgotten Arm, Aimee Mann
Suit Yourself, Shelby Lynne
The Outsider, Rodney Crowell (not his best, but it's growing on me)

Hayes Carll - Little Rock
Quirky, literate, hard country and folk all rolled up with a lot of Texas attitude. I recall some talk about this CD early on, but it's been a repeat player for me. My #3 of the year right now.

I remember when "Welcome Interstate Managers" was released . . . there was a fair amount of love for the Fountains Of Wayne on these very boards. I know "Out of State Plates" (their latest) is mostly made up of B-sides and covers BUT there is enough new/and unreleased stuff on this double disc to make it their "Demo-lition" This thing is waaaaaaay better than "Welcome IM's" in my opinion. Actually come to think of it . . . it's waaaaaay better than "Demolition" too.

You're right--"Out of State Plates" is really good. The only reason I haven't said much about it is that most of the songs aren't new to me. I made my own b-sides/rarities disc several years ago. The songs are great though...most are every bit as good as their other stuff.

Great overlooked albums of 2005:
- Brendan Benson 'Alternative to Love' - It's no 'Lapalco' but it's pretty damn good
- The Posies 'Every Kind of Light' - I didn't like it much at first, but there are some seriously great songs on this one
- Stars 'Set Yourself On Fire' - Lovely synth-pop
- Clem Snide 'End of Love' - Nice rebound after 'Soft Spot'

Black Mountain - S/T : If there ever was a throwback to fist pumping Black Sabbath this is the record.

The Go Team - Thunder, Lightning, Strike : Just makes me want to kick open a fire hydrant and dance around the flood, great summer record. Although I think it originally came out in 04, it didn't hit the states until this year.

Agreed on Black Mountain, but I think The Go! Team's record had quite a bit of hype (at least of the indie flavor) surrounding its stateside release. I'm remiss to call it overlooked due to that...but yeah, fucking phenomenal album. "Bottle Rocket" is the greatest thing ever, basically.

Yeah when it finally did get released in the states it was hyped up not to the point of some bands though. Bottle Rocket is a great song, my personal favorite is Ladyflash. It's been overlooked here at act though, so that's gotta count for something.

The Hotel Alexis "The Shining Example Is Lying On The Floor". This is one I've just come across and I'd wager its under most peoples' radars. I'm gonna wait a while before doing a whole thread on this but early days so far its very promising indeed. It's sunny pastoral stuff fans of Summer Hymns "Clemency", Dylan "new Morning" and latter Yo La Tengo stuff would be into. Hushed vocals, beautiful pedal steel sound, brushed drums...all of that.

I would add Portastatic's bright ideas. The closet thing your gonna get to a new Superchunk album anytime in the near future. More superchunky and structured that most of the old portstatic but more jangly than your typcial superchunk. Not a perfect album but worth picking up.

these guys are really good, very similar to Norfolk and Western, they happen to be from the same part of New Hampshire as me, and i did get a chance to see them perform as a warm up to matt pond PA at the Stone Church in newmarket, nh about a year ago. at that time they played a noisy jammy atmospheric drone (like YHF interludes) kind of set and i was left with a misleading poor impression of them. i have since paid a little better attention to them i am on the hunt from this cd and for the next show around my town...

thanks for reminding me.
