Eagles doc

Post by Wordman »

Guess I am the only one here (except Sandu) that watched it?

I brought it up a while ago, but nobody showed any interest. Haven't seen it yet. Would have to find the thread.

I am not ashamed to say I watched most of it and enjoyed it. Especially the Joe Walsh bits.

Agreed. There are a few songs I really love - "Take It Easy", "Train Leaves Here This Morning", "Peaceful Easy Feeling" and "Already Gone". Sweet stuff.

Early stuff...I'm with you there...Glyns Johns was right...they were a far better country rock band than they ever were an arena rock monster...

I spied it a few weeks back and talked to Ray about it on Facebook. Epic doc that covers everything you'd ever want to know. Tons of archive footage. Everyone seems pretty gakked up on blow. Don Henley cracked the whip and all others fell in line. Glen Fry seems like the cooler head and I like his songs better. Ray, which is better--Jackson Browne's or the Eagles' version of "Take It Easy"?

Like I said to the wordman on FB, if the Eagles never got HUGE we'd all love them like the Burritos, Byrds, Gram, Neil, etc. You can't deny the craftsmanship of those early songs. Their worst sin is they became mega-stars.

I have found most people of a certain age absolutely HATE the eagles. I liken it to the "Wagon Wheel" effect that we are experiencing with that song now. Yes....victim of their own success.

This came about from a discussion with some musician friends of mine wherein the bar was playing horrible 80's hair band cock rock which I proclaimed to be the worst music ever created. They all countered that the eagles was the worst music ever created. Ha....again...it's that age thing as they were all about 10 years older.

"I've heard enough of the eagles that I never want to hear them again" was the quote

anyway, just something that intrigues me as I never thought the eagles as bad as the rap they get, and agree with the abovers point above.

I watched the documentary over the weekend and agree it was well done if a little dramatic. I got the impression it was Frey who cracked the whip though, he seemed intent on driving out Leadon and Meisner in the early days and much later wanted to murder Felder before throwing him out. Agree the first three albums are early country rock gems up there with Gene Clark, The Burritos, Byrds, Poco and Neil Young but once Frey and Henley took full control of the songwriting, they became just another radio friendly R 'n b rock band.

Yeah, that scene where Frey is gonna kicks that guy's ass is hilarious. All through the show they keep taunting each other. And that dude that didn't want to sing the high notes on "Take It To The Limit", so they ousted him. I still think Henley called more shots in the studio. Like when he nixed that same guy's idea to sing his own song. But basically, it was Don Henley and Glenn Frey. Don Henley must die, don't let him get back together with Glen Frey.

It's a very good rockumentary. Frey comes off as a pretty big asshole. Randy Meisner honestly looks so horrible now (he was a good looking guy once upon a time) that you can't help but wonder if he's in the early stages of Alzheimer's. shocking appearance.

Loved both parts and it showed how fractious it can be in a band from starting out to making your mark. Through all the changes they made some classic early country-rock through to great FM r'n'b. Loved the quote from Glenn Frey when Walsh was touted as a future member, " he's an interesting bunch of guys".
