This is such a pleasant surprise after Heaven Is Whenever, which I thought was pretty mediocre. This one far exceeds it in terms of song quality and production and pretty much every other way. There are a couple of ballads (which are great), but it's definitely a big rock record. I'm digging every song. It's definitely my favorite album so far this year.

BTW I guess their new guitarist is from Lucero. He definitely contributes here.

I'll have to still put eyes and ears on this one.

For whatever reason (talk-singing per Shane?), I have never really explored this band and will check out the new release. However, I will say that Craig Finn is an awkward frontman based on seeing him on Letterman recently. I did like him on the Color Me Impressed movie though...a Mats fan at heart it seems.

Yeah I really thought they were done after hearing Heaven is Whenever. It seemed like they were out of ideas. But this is a great record. Good to see them putting out such a strong record sans keyboard guy.

I skipped Heaven is Whenever for whatever reason. I will probably get this one soon. What are the best tracks off Heaven?

Hurricane J is probably the best one, and it's not very good.

My favorite off that album is We Can Get Together, which I think is one of their better ballads. When my favorite thing on a HS album is a ballad, that's not a great sign.

Also I started with them at Boys and Girls. The talk-singing wears me down a bit, but I always see these good reviews of "Separation Sunday" and "Almost Killed Me". Anyone mess with those much? I think he started singing more at Boys and Girls.

I really try to like them. But the talk singing just isn't my thing.

So apparently they added a new guitarist who used to play with Lucero--Steve Selvidge. Definitely a cool sound they've got going now.
