Bands/artists you don’t get

Yeah, Tom Waits for me too. I always feel like I'm supposed to like him, but his music just makes me zzzzzzzzz. Swordfishtrombone, Bone Machine, and Rain Dogs all have their load of interesting songs but for the most part I'd be fine never hearing another Waits song the rest of my life. And his voice, man just never could get past that.

Even the most deadicated of us will tell that the Dead is an aquired taste....You really had to see them to get it....Same with Bruce from what I have heard.....Maybe I should do that.....

Anyway, The Dead are hard to turn someone else on too....There is not a single album that you can point to and say "This is the one"......

I have never heard the satanic thing though..... This band couldn't generate a dark moment if they tried.......Although they did this thing with Ken Kesey at a Halloween show that scared the shit out of me but that might have been the mushrooms.....

This band couldn't generate a dark moment if they tried.

You tok the words right out of my mouth.

But I think everybody who loves folk, country, rock you know whatever....could get into "American Beauty", it's not a hard listen. Just great songs.....

I never saw em', I havn't seen Springsteen either for that matter....but I still get it

But your right, I guess it's an aquired taste....some of the stuff at least, but not "Working Mans Dead" or "American Beauty".

Yeah, but when's the last time you listened to a Tom Waits album? I know he's a gifted writer, eccentric artists all that but if I'm just being honest I never find myself compelled to listen to any of his music. I think I like him as an actor better than a musician--love 'Down By Law' and even 'Cold Feet'--but his music gives me the ole snores. And Westy likes a lot of stuff I don't--Jackson Browne gets hate from my house all hours of the day

Hell, all tok for me was "Ripple". A friend of mine gave me "American Beauty" and told me to listen to it... it's such a sweet album.. if your not a Grateful Dead fan after listening to that one, you will never be one.

Last time I listened to a Tom Waits album was last night, I own them all, and I play at least one a week, usually two or three cos when you're in the mood.

I can understand that people don't get him, but Waits is a real polariser, people either don't get him, or adore him. I've never met anyone who just kinda likes him

Tom Waits is a god!! I played "Nighthawks At The Diner" earlier today, god I love that album. I think your either a fan, or not.

If you are going to slam The Dead's early acoustic albums as not being country then I think that sayin' Cash is Country is a poor analogy. As I will agree that "Beauty" and "Workingmans" is not country as much as it is Americana, but I think that you will find some country purists that will profess that JC isn't all that country either. Or at least his own definition of country/pushed the country envelope.....

But Jesse probably had the most apropos response to the thread. Anyone who thinks the Dead are demonic or whatever truly, truly doesn't "get" them. And so it is. The best quote I ever heard about the Dead was "We're like licorice, the folks that don't like us really don't like us, but those that like us REALLY like us"

They played "Candyman" on the way home. If that's not Country music, I really don't want to know what is. That was the beauty. Not only Workingman's and American Beauty, but Garcia's first solo album, Weir's first solo album, these guys are rolled in some of the most honest, lyrical Americana ever created.
