I just had a thought. Is FJM the new Randy Newman?

I hope so. I think there's a lot of good qualities in Randy Newman's lyrics that could work well when combined with a different approach musically.Beldo wrote:I just had a thought. Is FJM the new Randy Newman?

That's my thinking too. Obviously he's a much better singer than Newman, but his lyrical ideas and the general vibe of biting sarcasm set to beautiful music was more or less trademarked by Newman.

Newman's "Sail Away" is a great example of what he's capable of lyrically in that regard. It sounds like pitching to someone to come to this new and wonderful place, but farther along you get, the more you realize that the pitch-man is actually a slave trader.Beldo wrote:That's my thinking too. It's not that I want Tillman to overhaul his approach necessarily. I would be just as satisfied if he was still making albums like "Minor Works" or "A Year in the Kingdom". It could be interesting though, to see this other approach taken a little further. There aren't many artists of the modern persuasion that have lyrics like that, if you really think about it. I'm not bitching, but most lyrics are generally similar. Mostly relationship-based songs that are just abstract enough to not sound conversational. You get the occasional breakthrough "story" song by people like DBT's or Richmond Fontaine or someone like that, but there's not a lot of sardonic lyrics that work well and don't come off as whiney. I guess Eef Barzelay from Clem Snide (and solo) had some witty stuff, but a lot of it meandered off into goofy territory.

That song was awful. And an album titled "I Love You, Honeybear"? Terrible. And he's no Randy Newman.

I kinda love this song. Feel BAD for buddies who hate it.

It's growing on me. I actually like it now, although I think almost everything off the last record is better.

I would like to take a Summer Cruise with all FJM songs but I would like to hang out in a sad old dive bar with all the J.Tillman songs. Both work for me but I crave FJM at this point. How many artists have ever pulled off the alter-ego thing successfully besides Chris Gaines?
