Re: Podcasts?

I just don't know how much of the stuff that he is talking about actually exists in the real world, or at least in the fly-over states. I am certainly exposed to it within the culture of the Internet and twitter, but not so much in the day to day. Tried to bring up his grievances to some people currently in grad school, but they weren't too aware of it. He did touch on the stuff that happened at the Missouri campus, and I guess that in his mind that's an extension of what he rails against.

I think that's part of his point, right? That it's sort of bleeding over from social media into college campuses because the "real world" wouldn't allow it.

I'm not too familiar with this guy. I read the article, and while I agree with some of his assessments on this particular problematic portion of society, I disagree with this:

Who wants to share a ride or a house or a doctor with someone who doesn’t have a good online reputation? The reputation economy depends on everyone maintaining a reverentially conservative, imminently practical attitude: Keep your mouth shut and your skirt long, be modest and don’t have an opinion. The reputation economy is yet another example of the blanding of culture, and yet the enforcing of groupthink has only increased anxiety and paranoia, because the people who embrace the reputation economy are, of course, the most scared.

While I agree with the danger, and certainly existence of a "groupthink" mentality that is infecting culture, I certainly do not see it borne of the same pathogens as he. I will have to checkity check his podcast with Q though, sounds like my kind of thing.

I had to drive to Boston and back today (2 hrs in rush hour), so I listened to the BEE podcast with Stephen Malkmus. Steve is awesome, but Bret comes off as soooooo pretentious, especially in his opening monologue where he is comparing Pavement to the main character in the movie Inside Llewyn Davis. I know the podcast was over a year ago when the movie was just out, but what the fuck man? How pretentious can you get? And how much can you over analyze Generation X? Jesus Christ. He really annoyed me. I'm not sure I'm going to listen to any of his other interviews.

Here's a pretty compelling indictment.

Of course I'm just being a dick here. The same shitty video could be made with EVERY generation. Stupidity and crappy taste in music are not exclusive to any one generation. I've met awesome people in every age group, but still, the assholes will ALWAYS outnumber the decent. Unfortunately, as you age, your senses weaken and you no longer can effectively assess the mephitis of your own fecal matter, thus you rail against the young.

Steven Hyden has a new podcast called Celebration Rock and posted the first two episodes yesterday. First one is interviews with Matt Beringer and Dan Auerbach, and the second is a fantastic interview with Chuck Klosterman.

But not Serial 2. Yeah, not really that enthralled with it either. I'm assuming the ratings have been nowhere near what Season 1 had, but just my assumption. Anyone know? Plus, what's this every-other-week bs now?

Will BEE ever do another podcast? It's been 2 mos since he interviewed Tarantino. Ever since his man crush James Deen was accused of rape BEE has gone radio silent. Have the milennials finally shut him down? BEE suffering from post Empire blues?
