On first listen, nothing really stood out too much. Generally, it seemed to me that the less that was going on in the songs, the more I liked it. The last 3 tracks were solid. Overall I'm not too keen on this one, though I might like it a bit more than the last album.

I like Damien a lot and at this stage of his career I'd consider him a very strong, time-tested songwriter, but the last few albums have come off as mediocre to me. "Caught in the Trees" was hit or miss, but the second half of the album had a couple songs that were some of the best he's had EVER. I just don't hear that on these last few.

I'm interested to hear where Jurado goes next, as this seemed to be described as a trilogy of albums. I'd really like it if things swayed the other way, towards the more conventional songwriting.

^ I didn't think Brothers and Sisters was that great (especially coming off the high of Mariqopa), but I love this new one. I think it's up there with his best stuff.

Man, I love Caught in the Trees as well. It was my favorite album that year. I feel like his output of that one up to the new record is definitely his creative peak, with one kinda mediocre record mixed in.

I just hope that this isn't his last album or something. It almost has the feel of a final album, and he's made references to wanting to do more painting and other things more. Unlikely, I think, but it has crossed my mind.

I read something that mentioned a suicide attempt in passing. Was that recent?

Wow, crazy stuff. A review I read noted that "Kola" kind of sounds like he's saying goodbye to his children, which is super depressing.
