Dinosaur Jr.-what a fucking great band

Post by Sandusky »

Was thinking about making a Barlow years vs. major label years but after listening to all the Dinosaur catalog I didn't see the point since it all kicks so much ass. From the early sludge rock of 'Repulsion' to the bouncy pop of 'I Live For That Look' to the electric fuzz take on 'Just Like Heaven' to the burnt out basement downer songs on 'Hand It Over' (probably Mascis most underrated album if ye ask me), and even to the last Fog record and new rejuvenated lineup that is currently touring, J Mascis is an indie rock god of slackerdom and thunder. Let's talk some Dinosaur Jr. buddies--what's yer favorite album, why, concert experiences, testomonies, etc. So fucked I can't believe it, if there's a way I wish we'd see it. What a mess.

Um seems weird to me that J was making the sweet altcountry sounds we love back before Uncle Tupelo but no one can show any love for this killer band  .

I was listening to 'You're Living All Over Me' last night thinking 'this is so good'. That monster guitar solo J does on 'Kracked' is nuts, pure sonic bliss like a mammoth sound that is so off the scales that it borders on chaos, just absurd to hear all this furious volume that erupted out of this instrument. Mascis started off as a drummer and when he switched to guitar he just banged away at the strings like they were another drum set. Did you buddies know that J was Nirvana's #1 choice for a drummer before they recorded 'Nevermind'? Lucky for us J declined so he could continue his own killer sounds.

These guys had the coolest look ever too. I especially dig the young Lou Barlow, fucking classic lonely nerd look. And what about Murph with is mullet? J just leans back and wishes he was still in bed.

To the above: track #2 on 'Hand It Over' is what it's all about. Some great sad electric country sounds to my ears. Love to hear J's golden pipes sing with female backing vox. This song makes me love the Dino twang, so many great Dino twang songs like 'Post' and 'In A Jar', J was doing the Crazy Horse thing way before it was cool.

Has anyone heard the new live CBGB's CD yet? It's supposedly J's first acoustic show. Curious if it's worth picking up.

Hey melt, I'm a bit leery of that live cd. It was recorded before 'Green Mind' and I've heard it's sort of hit or miss. Do you have 'Me & Martin'? Think it's close to that one. I never could get into 'Me & Martin', love some J acoustic songs like 'Quicksand' and 'Flying Clouds' but for the most part like to hear him make eardrums bleed. Really, one of the best Dinosaur albums I've heard is that Japanese import with the Burrito Bros. cover on it--Christian sent me a copy years ago and it's excellent although I need another copy since I wore mine out. Must remedy this situation.

Yeah "Me & Martin" isn't all that great. Like you said, a few good versions but mostly it just made me want to listen to the originals. Haven't heard the import you mention but sounds cool.

'Hand It Over' is so good. I was just blasting it to the pigeons in the park. Is that J playing banjo on track #11? Love that killer falsetto chorus on that one as well. Which is ye favorite track--'I'm Insane' or 'I Know Yer Insane' 8) ? I think the latter is one of J's best songs ever, a song awash in fuzzy guitar greatness.

My favorite band. When we first strated out everyone said a bunch of uncle tupelo stuff about us. Dj was THE band i wanted to be in. Punk with Neil young guitar solos. amazing.
"I'm gonna go outside and punch myself in the dick. It would be more enjoyable than this." Christian (lil Capn Travis) while watching Joanna Newsome.

I only started listening with Green Mind, which I assume were the beginning of the major label years. Love everything I've heard from Green Mind on. Need to go back and get some old stuff...

I think I once owned an album of theirs. The only song I can remember is "I feel the pain on everyone". That was Dinosaur Jr., wasn't it? I may have to revisit this band. Where should I start?
