Looks too French to me. What's the big deal about it? Is the Kylie Minogue scene good?
It seems to take on the audience vs. artist themes tackled by Lynch in INLAND EMPIRE, only to far lesser effect. Some scenes are quite interesting, many are quite silly. If a thing can be considered "too french," I would reserve that distinction for mimes or at the very least those berets they wear. However, this movie does take an honest stab at it. The Kylie Minogue scene kinda gently steals from von Trier's Dancer In The Dark and Herbert Ross' Pennies From Heaven. If you are familiar with those films, then you may catch my drift. It's not a terrible movie. I just think it's a classic case of "The Emperor's New Clothes," only this time the Emperor isn't naked . . . it's just that his invisible clothes aren't as great as everyone is making them out to be.

Taney, You do NOT believe this. You meant to say something else. Please post more carefully.
This was great, and it was better than Dark Knight Rises, OK? But was it 47 Oscars better? I mean, like I enjoyed it and I'd never watch it again and I've watched Dark Knight Rises like 3 times now. I mean, it was great. But I don't see why this is SO great and Dark Knight Rises isn't.
The movie was generally really good but it seemed like a very realistic portrayal of what happened for 95% of the movie and then 5% Hollywood bullshit at the end. I mean, I'm not bitching about the bullshit, actually my problem is that the rest of the movie didn't have enough bullshit. I could tell Alan Arkin was a composite or just a made up dude because he was hysterical and the best part of the movie. John Goodman was terrific, and Ben Affleck played the role really well, oddly enough. But the characters were kind of drab, understated, too "real life." COME ON AFFLECK, MOVIE THIS SHIT UP.
Anyway, still good. If I were reviewing it on Pitchfork I'd give it a 7.67 out of 10.

Also, weird that when they were playing the record on the last night in Tehran, and I was like, "OH MY GOD THEY'RE PLAYING THE BEASTIE BOYS! GAFFE! GAFFE! Oh wait that's When the Levee Breaks." I don't think I'd actually heard the real song in a couple years.

Hah, I just watched it too. All the "just barely missed them" stuff in the climax seemed kinda contrived but I don't know enough about it to say for sure. Pretty good, just not sure it's Best Picture good, but then again I've missed a lot of the nominees this year.

Man, the Wikipedia entry on Argo makes it sound like 75% of the drama is made up. Also, Affleck pissed off Canada, Britain and the Kiwis who think his changes made them look bad. It sort of makes me wonder why they didn't just make a fictional movie based on the events?

I watched Argo last night as well. Pretty good, well acted, entertaining...but not Best Picture worthy. And it's gonna win Best Picture tomorrow night, by all accounts. Zero Dark Thirty was far superior in my opinion.
Yeah. It was good, I don't want to say it was bad. I was just expecting it to be better. It was like, as good as the second Bourne movie. You know, "good" but not like "wow" good. Bonus points for being a true story and I'm willing to be more charitable about the stupid stuff because that does probably translate the fear that those people were feeling as they were leaving.
I think Hollywood can't stop blowing themselves when the movies are about movies in some way. So Argo will win Best Picture. I didn't see any of the other nominees I don't think. I'll watch Zero Dark Thirty but I can't imagine watching Silver Linings Playbook and I love David O Russell.
Looking forward to ZDT. I really love Katheryn Bigelow's earlier work in Hurt Locker and Point Break.

Saw "End of Watch" and thought it was quite good. Seldom do we see movies about good cops who enjoy their job and want to do good but are perhaps limited by their status. Very cool, realistic (and likely improvised) scenes between the partners that illustrates the camaraderie that keeps them alive. The film is not a comedy by any stretch but the dialogue between the partners is at time hysterical. I'm still not completely sold on the found footage thing, and the movie doesn't really adhere to it like Chronicle did, but it does give startling immediacy to some of the scenes and offer interesting camera angles that put you in the action. Recommended.
