DADDY wrote:Gotta dissagree with the two abovers. Of course all this is purely subjective, but I don't think the Wilcos TRY to be all that experimental. That's what I like most about them. They just kind of follow their muse and do what they want. Sometimes I'm on board and sometimes I'm not, but they never leave me cold.
Sky Blue Sky is a much better record, in my opinion, than most give it credit for. I feel I will be one day vindicated for this, but alas, that day has not yet arrived. YHF is a very good record that has benefited from a pretty cool back story. "Back to the Egg" suffers from some "production choices," but still manages to be better than most albums released by the recording populace. Even "Camel Party" has it's charms. To say that their (the wilcos) latter albums are above average is unfair of me. They are above average for wilco albums, because they initially set the bar so high (of course, again, according to me). I think it was Paul McCartney who once lamented (probably due to poor critical response of everyone of his albums post Band On The Run) that "It's really hard to write a good song that everyone is going to like."
Truer words Paul . . . truer words . . . axiomatic . . . but still . . .
I think this is a really good album in a long succession of good albums. Fuck, even Ryan Adams hasn't accomplished that.
Nice post, Daddy-O. "Sky Blue Sky" was wonderful. (You are officially vindicated, young man.)
Other than that 'Refrigerator Noise' song off of "Ghost", I don't think this is a very experimental outfit. They are following their muse, not trying to piss off long-time fans. Just keeping it fun.
Have not heard the new album but am looking forward to it!

Sky Blue Sky is easily the best album they ever made. It's also the most listenable over time. The first half of that record is the greatest half ever put on wax. It makes their early releases almost embarrassing.

Not sure how to reply as I think this could be another example of mookie "ruffling feathers" but I will say I think Sky Blue Sky is a terribly underrated album. I think the 2 or 3 bad songs on that album are pretty bad, and may help to bring down the quality of the album, but the rest of the songs are some of Tweedy's best ever.

Sky Blue Sky is probably my favorite post-YHF Wilco album, but "Side with the Seeds" and "Shake it Off" are 2 of the worst songs Jeff Tweedy has ever written.

You are correct, sir.

Nah, no attempts at feather ruffling this time, buddy. I truly love Sky Blue Sky. A song like "Impossible Germany" makes a song like "Outa Mind, Outa Site" sound so amateur. To me anyway.
Sky Blue Sky also got me thru my son being born with a disability. Maybe that's why I favor it over anything they've ever done.

I agree and I think you're right; Impossible Germany could not have been written by a 26 year old Jeff Tweedy. I'm not sure if I'd say it's necessarily better than the early stuff, but certainly more mature.

I hated 'Side With the Seeds' until I heard it live. Then I was all,
'Shake it off' sucks.

Yeah, more mature is probably the right word. I turn 43 in a month so that probably says a lot. No angst for this guy. Just smooth dad rock these days.

Sky Blue Sky is the only post-AM Wilco album I've never listened to, and all this talk almost has me convinced that I need to hear it. I guess before I always had the impression that everyone hated it.

For me Wilco's offerings are hit or miss. Love everything through YHF, hate a Ghost is Boring, Kicking TV was great, love Sky Blue Sky, and hate the last two snoozers. these last two have done nothing for me.
That being said, I do think they are a great band capable of greatness. I'm seeing them live on Friday in Central Park. I hope the sets are light on the newest stuff.......

Sky Blue Sky is my personal favorite Wilco album...then again, I am a Dad.
Also, I deleted "Shake It Off" from my mp3 copy of it...WORST. WILCO. SONG. EVER!
