Re: Why can't Americans at large handle gay marriage?
I think the gov keeps it illegal for the exact reasons you stated. It's a reason to arrest over half of the population. In the 60s/70s they used it to arrest "hippies" who were causing civil disobedience and keep them imprisoned. Before that used it to arrest minorities who weren't towing the line. Now they say they use it to arrest small timers in hopes it will lead them to the big timers. They try to tell us now that smoking a j is akin to supporting terrorism. The simple fact of the matter is the reason criminals are involved with it is BECAUSE it's illegal, not the other way around. If they truly wanted to stop the money from supporting terrorism or gangs, etc...they would at the very least decriminalize. But then again there is the fact that herion production in Afghanistan was pretty much non-existent before we "took over", now it's the world's number one supplier (and I have no doubt this money is used to fund some kind of clandestine activities that our gov is involved in)
Now I'm not one who believes it can be made legal in one fell swoop. Those violent criminals you mentioned (many of whom may have been initially arrested on a simple drug charge and have now become career criminals because of this), something needs to be done with them. You cannot just release everyone at once, so there is of course that issue.
Now regarding people claiming the "mystical" properties of it, the way I see that is they are fighting back with the same tactics (drastically stretching the truth) used to make it illegal and keep it that way. The truth lies somewhere in the middle.

Can't we just get to the bottom line here - America hates gays and minorities. Duh.
And that is in no way a blanket statement - I have prove.

Sounds like something that some dirty Samoan would say. Now that I think about it, I haven't seen any pictures of you before. How are we to know that you aren't one of them?Verbow wrote:Can't we just get to the bottom line here - America hates gays and minorities. Duh.

disclaimer: tons of respect for Samoans.

Did you know the Girls Scouts changed the name of the ever so delicious Samoas to Carmel Delights or some such nonsense? Waterboard those little wenches until they change it back!

I would love to boycott but there's no way I'll be able to avoid eating them. I'm up to about 4 boxes per season.

Forget gay marriage - the real issue is the Girl Scouts fucking with the names and packaging of their cookies. I will have a Facebook page up in an hour.

I don't think they changed the name--the names are different in different areas.

I think you're right. I checked via the official website for said cookies, and it lists both. Maybe if you live in an area with more Samoan people they call them Caramel deLights just to be nice.Beldo wrote:I don't think they changed the name--the names are different in different areas.

Well, they used to be called Samoas where I live, and now they're not. I will not tolerate any rational explanations.El Santo wrote:I think you're right. By the way, if you are a twenty something male and access the girl scouts site, do they flag that somehow, just in case?

Re: Why can't Americans at large handle gay marriage?
1) Americans simply associate sweeping social change with a loss of a romantic vision of what America was and can be. We take more time on this stuff than is necessary because our common social fabric is weak. We are not a unified society like most of the rest of the industrialized world. We live alongside each other. Not together...
2) Political and religious leaders in this country have used this as leverage to launch themselves to prominence and galvanize division. At least this part is not uniquely American. This just happens to be the flash point issue that has been used. It is a red herring and usually comes up when they run out of things to make you afraid of or do not want to tell you the truth about real issues. (i.e. - Politicians on their own or when they reach their desired office have little or no power over the economy or the unemployment rate)
3) The gay equal rights power players made a MAJOR mistake when they used the word "Marriage"! - The US is the most religious nation on earth (By the % of those who proclaim to have "faith"), we are mostly protestant or catholic and "marriage" plays a huge role in the dogmatic playbook. Had the movement focused on equal rights in the eyes of the law and publicly respected the right of a church to refuse to marry them under strict religious interpretation, all they would have had to do is wait a bit. The free market would have given them plenty of churches to get married in (and take their tithes) which has happened in most cities of over 50k. 15 years of separate but equal would have given them all of the societal acceptance they needed and gotten the momentum far past the tipping point.
4) The media over-blows this. I trust no polls on this because they continually pose the wrong question in the wrong place and context. If you asked every American, individually and in private, "As much as the gay lifestyle repulses you, do you believe that their right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness should be legally curbed?" I believe you would be impressed by the number of "No's". - If you added a constitutional component to that question, I think you would be even more impressed.

They used to be called Caramel Delights in my region, but they are now known as Samoans. I guess the Girl Scouts are giving Samoans a chance to be offended in all regions.
I think one of the singers in Coheed and Cambria is Samoan.
