Came across one of these kits on Musicians Friend...and couldn't believe how much the price has come down on this sort of technology. I'm wondering if this is something that I should take a look at.

In the case that you aren't aware...I am currently forced to do "finger drums" on a fucking keyboard to lay down beats to our songs. It's tedious...stifling...and not only that...it's REALLY HARD to keep a steady 3 part beat with two stupid index fingers.
If you are questioning the indie-ness of an electronic drum kit...keep in mind the situation I have just explained above. I'm all for being real and honest....but if getting an electronic kit instead of a standard kit is going to save me hours of setup time...and hundreds of dollars on drum microphones...I might just go for it. At least I'll be able to actually take part in the physical act of playing drums.

We've got a couple of electric drumkits at school and I think they are pretty damn good. If yu can't have a real drumkit then i would def go with one.

i've been interested in these too... especially since playing rockband, seems like i might actually be able to play some... a friend of mine plays in a local band, and uses an electric set, but still uses his regular snare, just prefers the sound of the snare...

WHOA. That was one of the convincing factors as well. Rockband Drums isn't that far off from real drums when you think about it. If I can play "Detroit Rock City" on Hard...I should be able to function on drums. I was pretty decent before...but Rockband has helped my ability to detect beats and timing a lot better.grapenehi wrote:i've been interested in these too... especially since playing rockband, seems like i might actually be able to play some...

It's all in the sound of the unit, Jesse. You got a pretty good thing going with your current set-up jesse. I mean, really - your drums sound better than most real acoustic drumsets I've heard mic-ed and recorded. Part of it may be that you know how to use them without over-using them. And the snare sound that you managed to get for Good things/Bad Timing is perfect to my hearing ears. I've heard a few electronic sets before, and they've been alright - at best. Too many synths, and not enough staight up acoustic samples that sound really good. I'm sure it's a matter of getting what you pay for. Did you decide on anything yet?

I'm interested in this as we are thinking of going to electronic drums at church to control stage volume a little better

Re: electronic drum kit???
I played elec drums regularly in one of my gigs for Jesus. Pronounced Hay-Zeus. It was a Roland set up. A bit more than what you got, but it was good. Probably good in the studio, but does not do well live... at least the way I played. The cymbals were not touch sensitive so no matter how hard you hit them they were the same volume. Which was funny actually when they would try to "bring it down" for the prayer and alter call and instead of a light cymbal a loud "CRASH" could be heard. Then everyone would look back at me on stage. I of course would just have my head bowed in quiet reverence.
Go with Roland whatever you do. I have heard nothing but bad about others.

your aggressive use of the crash cymbal makes Jesus angry.
