The Show That Officially Wrecked My Hearing

Post by Rockstar Aimz »

Per Toddygirl: "Mine was DBT around 2004. My ears rang for three days and never fully recovered. Note to the younguns: always wear ear plugs!"

El Santo: "I've been to a lot of shitty hardcore shows in my day, the kind where the sound could kill passing birds, but oddly enough, the closest I've ever come to tapping out and needing to step outside was at a J Tillman show in like 2010. It must have been the size of the room, and the punch that the band had, but it was almost too much. Felt that one for awhile."

Aimz: The Sadies 2007 (I think) New Years Eve show. It was awesome and I had a hot date and my ears rang for two days.

Bob Mould - Last Dog and Pony Show - 1998. Stood right next to the stage - couldn't hear right for 4 days. It actually hurt anytime someone was speaking in a normal tone anywhere in my general vicinity. Still didn't really start wearing ear plugs to shows for several years after, but that was by far the loudest show I've ever been to.

Not really sure what year exactly, but early 1990's Smithereens show in SF - I think it was a Great American Music Hall. Both my wife and I agree that it was painfully loud.

many many punk & hardcore shows...Black Flag, X, Ramones, Husker Du etc.

However the one I really remember doing permanent damage was mid 80's Jason & the Scorchers with the Georgia Satellites (brand new band then) opening. At the Paradise in Boston. Serious pain was inflicted. And while I can't blame my challenged hearing solely on this show, it certainly tipped me over to a new sensory low from which I have not ever recovered.

Cheap Trick in 1987 on campus the first week of my freshman year. Way too much equipment for the venue size. I couldn't hear shit for 3 days. On the positive side , I caught Robin Zander's sweaty towel and Rick Neilson's guitar pick. Still got 'em.

Also Rage Against the Machine around '93 in STL. Stupid loud.

Yeah...too many shows from my college years to really pinpoint it. I do recall however...squirming up to the front at a Sugarcubes show in Dallas...probably 1988. My head was about 3 feet was one of the speakers.

I've had a constant ring in my head/ears for over 25 years.

Pixies during the Tempe le Monde tour circa 92. I swear my eyes hurt after that show it was so loud. Also coulda had something to do with the mushrooms.

Also, Slobberbone at the continental club in Houston 2004. That one made me hang up shows in small venues that weren't acoustic.

It was a shitty band named Film School that my now-mrs dragged me to. They sucked so bad, even she was game for cutting out before the end of the set. After three days of harsh ringing, hearing returned but the ringing has been in my left ear since. The right ear gained an ongoing ringing after a nasty sinus infection.

Most recently, the Afghan Whigs about 3 weeks ago. Ears rang for a few days. Incredible show but I've no earthly idea how any of those band members can hear a freakin thing at this point.

Sunn O))) - had never heard them, but I went to see what all the fuss was about. It was a kind of low end volume like I had never heard before or since. It made me nauseous, but was kind of awesome.

Also Dino Jr, and it's not even close. Jason Loewenstein (Sebadoh) and his band (w/Lou?) opened. Quest Club, Minneapolis, July 2005. Center stage with my friend just behind the moshers. I remember the opening band guy saying just before they left the stage that Dino would be out soon to rip our heads off. Not quite gut-level, nausea-inducing loud, but sheer volume you could feel. My hearing earholes didn't shake that 'underwater' effect and regain full capacity for a good three or four days after. She and I had to yell across the car to hear each other on the long drive home. :D

I have tinnitus all the time now. I 'm sure it's been accumulative, as I've been to tons of concerts without ear plugs and have had the diminished hearing afterwards. But what probably tipped the scales wasTwo Cow Garage sometime this year. Some little cinder block club. Have seen them about 3 times...only wore ear plugs the second time. I didn't bother this last time. I then went to another concert later in the week without plugs and that made it worse.

The ringing varies in intensity. A night of drinking seems to make it flare up.

I'm curious what age we all were during these shows. I was 28. RIP hearing.
