Love the first 2 songs. Like the rest.

Ha I was just about to post like the first two songs, hate the rest. This album is full of Damn Shame/Fool King Crown retreads.

Glad El Santo mentioned the voice. It does seem to be more of a powerdown on this release. It's getting kinda worse with each release.

Blues <> problematic. This album is far from being a blues album. I will have to listen to it more since all I've been listening to is the new Prophet album.

The only two songs you could say are bluesy are:

Sinking Down and Threads and Steel.

Jay is no bluesman.

How about this great Fleetwood Mac cover?

I'm listening back to songs off of Tupelo's "March". Songs such as "Coalminers", etc etc. It's so obvious that it's the same person, but it seems so much better on the old stuff. I think there's so much more life in the way he used to sing. With the current material, I feel like he's not pushing it at all. Like, ever. Even when it might be warranted.

Spot on. He used to have grit, vigor, and a sense of pent up frustration. He seems more sedated now. It's not bad, but the old stuff is more engaging.

That's been part of my issue with Son Volt after "Trace"...like sometimes the songs aren't memorable to me like they should be, but they do have a lot of interesting musical stuff and guitar parts going on, but that damn lazy voice just leads me to forget. It's like it's hard to sing along to and embed in your brain.

Too bad Shane's not here or he would go nuclear on me.

I like this. Don't know if I love it yet, but I sure do like it. Same goes for the new RA. Too early to tell, but early indications are these will stay in my ipod for the year and not be bounced like last years Lucinda Williams album.

Gagreed, I haven't really connected with any SV record since Okemah, but I like this one more every time I listen.

The contribution phase is coming to an end.

Saw Jay Volt tonight on the tour kickoff. The dirt and grit that is missing from these tunes on the album shows up live. Again there's 2 or 3 tunes I would argue are Top 10 Son Volt songs. The more I listen to this the more I like it and since seeing them played live the more I feel like I get this album. If anything go see this tour because Jay is bringing the rock. So good.

The abover (or preceder, however this post is placed) reminds me that the other half of the now defunct Uncle Tupelos is making a stop in my neighborhood this year. Wonder how the hushed-low key tones of the Shmilco lp will be rendered live? Makes u wonder.
