It's My Life

Post by HighPlainsDrifter »

No, not The Animals, Talk Talk.

Perhaps the best thing to come out of new wave/synth-pop. Dated sound or not, a great song is a great song.

Agreed. I dig a lot of Talk Talk.

Also, I'm glad you're not referring to the Bon Jovi song.

Always loved that song. Remember hearing it for the first time on "Rock Over London", which was the greatest radio show ever and gave me a head start on my friends on knowing what was cool across the pond. Discovered New Order and Psychedelic Furs that way too.

Here's another good one from that era.....

Great song but prefer their later, post-rock sort of stuff ...'Laughing Stock', basically

Nice one, mook. Not a well-remembered band, but that stands up well with just about anything else from the time. That chorus.

Need to hear that album, BirdBrain. Got a friend who thinks very highly of it. Pitchfork did too on their '80s list. Maybe also Spirit of Eden.

I love this...I love Ian's music. He's a good friend of mine and I've seen him play live many times. Did you know he made an album with Crazy Horse?

Definitely Talk talk were great. For a genre that produced so much disposable stuff, there were surprisingly some real gems. I always liked:

Good call HPD..

digging deeper , singer and co-writer Mark Hollis released a classic solo album Mark Hollis in 1998. Unfortunately it didn't sell, a little too avante-garde, lo-fi, non-commercial perhaps, but a beautiful piece of work.

Talk Talk producer and co-writer Tim Friese-Greene is still active with various projects, also pretty avante garde and chilled.

Good stuff.

Tim Friese-Greene did a pretty decent song with Nick Cave for some Batman soundtrack.

This thread needs parachute pants. Good stuff. I'm always finding new stuff in this style of music. You have to dig a little but there's some really great tunes.

"Laughing Stock" is Radiohead, pre-Radiohead. Really quite brilliant. And virtually unknown, at least in the circles I ran in.

I remember that Factory In The Desert song, quality. And then of course years later this cool Ragged Glory-ish gem...
