Mix in Jawbreaker and u got it,Joe. I think the writing is top notch. Didn't care that much for American slang. This is way more rocking.

Giving this a spin. Not sure about his new soul style voice. "Mulholland Drive" made me throw up a little in my mouth. The Nirvana and TP covers are note for note copies. Good but kinda pointless and boring. I must forge my way through the whole thing before writing it off though.

I don't like the production much.

Funny how things work. I'm digging the heck out of it. Best cd I've heard this year.

Why does anyone hire Brendan O'Brien? He's like the king of making your sound bland and shrink-wrapped. I guess his sound gets stuff on radio? But does Gaslight Anthem have a chance of getting on the rapidly disappearing Modern Rock radio format?

That's a good description of the sound. The guitars are "shrink wrapped" and compressed. Trying not to be a negative Nancy on this. Need to listen more. Never had problems with this band's production before.

"59'Sound" got played quite a bit in Boston, but nothing from American Slang got played on the radio here. Who knows.

The album is OK. Only one listen and "National Anthem" is the only stand out. The rest sounds like their previous albums, but not as interesting this time around. As for Brendan O'Brien, didn't he used to work with Pearl Jam? That would explain it since Brian Fallon came out as a major PJ fan recently.
