Best post Berry REM tracks
Here's my top 15 sort of in order but not completely. I made spotify playlist too. What are yours. My list is Up heavy as I think it's by far the best post Berry album. Couldn't find one worthy track from Around the Sun. Every track on the albums sucks.

At My Most Beautiful
Daysleeper
I've Been High
She Just Wants To Be
Walk Unafraid
Sad Professor
Why Not Smile
Chorus and the Ring
Beachball
Supernatural Superserious
Living Well Is The Best Revenge
Don't know much from the last album. Remember absolutely nothing from Around the Sun. Just listened to "We All Go Back To Where We Belong" for the first time and it's really good. Burt Bacharach-y. I like it.

In no particuar order:
At My Most Beautiful
Sad Professor
Walk Unafraid
Falls to Climb
The Lifting
All the Way to Reno (You're Gonna Be a Star)
Chorus and the Ring
Boy In The Well
Leaving New York
Living Well Is the Best Revenge
Supernatural Superserious
Until the Day Is Done
Discoverer
It Happened Today
We All Go Back to Where We Belong
Although much maligned, and nowere near the highs of the IRS albums (and some of the Warner's albums), this period produced some good stuff. I had a hard time limiting it to 15.

Re: Best post Berry REM tracks
I'm going to have to go back and listen to Reveal a few more times. I could never get into that album. I think they went too far on the orchestration and electronics on that one and Beach Boys influence too. I know Up had a lot of electronics but it wasn't really as orchestrated, layered and polished. But seeing Chorus and the Ring on everyone's list but mine makes me think it deserves a second shot.
But yeah some of the later stuff was really under-rated. If any other band has released Up instead of REM it probably would have been considered a masterpiece.

"Chorus" has one of Stipe's best vocals ever. He really starts wailing at the end. Apparently, the song is about when William Burroughs met Kurt Cobain.

Doh! Forgot "The Great Beyond" - love that song.
Regarding Reveal - when I was making my list I was surprised how many songs I love off that album. I haven't listened to the whole album in a long time, and for me its always come off as a bit long and boring - but there are some damn fine songs on there. I regretted cutting "I'll Take The Rain", "Imitation of Life" and "She Just Wants to Be" from my list.

Thanks for compiling these guys. As big of a r.e.m. fan as I am...I've never given anything post-New Adventures a fair shake.
We All Go Back To Where We Belong is such a lovely tune.

Re: Best post Berry REM tracks
I like "Great Beyond" but don't love it. Was already burnt out on the REM Kauffman thing with "Man On The Moon". Maybe it's because I was living in Nashville back when "Man On The Moon" came out and the radio station at work played it 24/7. I definitely need to listen to "We All Go Back To Where We Belong" again. Haven't really given those bonus tracks a good listen.

Nice to see we're all unanimous about "Sad Professor". That's always been one of my favorite REM songs from the Berry-less years.

Love this one. The harmonies with Stipe, Mills and Eddie Vedder are gorgeous--remind me a lot of "Belong". Stipe really belts it out toward the end. Always love when he strains for those high notes. I read it's about the day Vic Chesnutt died.Verbow wrote:

Like Shane, I'm another who thinks there are some pretty good songs on Around The Sun. All the post Bill Berry albums suffer from dodgy production imv, the first three from too many electronic/ synth sound effects of which the over produced Around The Sun is the worst. However they all contain some great songs. The final two 'back to basics' albums suffer from being too compressed which makes them a really difficult listen for me:-(
