Soul Asylum - The Slowly But Shirley Tour
Soul Asylum’s Ryan Smith and Dave Pirner

Soul Asylum‘s breakout release was with their sixth studio album, 1992’s ‘Grave Dancers Union’ which featured the single Runaway Train that reached number five on the Billboard Charts and was the band’s biggest hit. The song helped bring the album to a multi-platinum level and won a Grammy Award for Best Rock Song in 1994. Its accompanying music video is notable for featuring images of missing people, most of them young children and teenagers. Lead singer Dave Pirner has stated thst the lyrics originally described hids experience of depression.

While visiting New York City in June 1995, I met up with my sister and her husband. On Friday, June 9, 1995, we stood in the lineup outside the Ed Sullivan Theatre and lucked out with tickets to the afternoon taping of The Late Show With David Letterman. We were the last three to get in with Stanby Tickets 15, 16, and 17.

Soul Asylum was the musical guest and they performed Misery.

Fast forward 29 years from having seen them on David letterman, this was my first Soul Asylum show, and the second time witnessing the performance of “Misery”.

Soul Asylum might have let their dim light shine in 1995, but in 2024 it was all flood lights on this incredibly satisfying show.
